Ben Carson’s political story has been almost as crazy and unpredictable at Donald Trump’s.
Starting as a world-renowned brain surgeon who dared to criticize President Obama, calls for his candidacy were loud and insistent. His kindness and down to earth ideas propelled him to the head of the large Republican pack for a time. And though he had major disagreements with Trump, when Carson dropped out of the race he threw his full weight behind Trump and acted as a surrogate.
Everyone expected Ben Carson to continue to be a part of Trump’s team in some manner, with many suggesting the position of Surgeon General. Carson played coy for weeks, but Trump has now announced that Ben Carson will have a significant position in his administration—but not as Surgeon General.
From Fox News:
President-elect Donald Trump announced Monday he has chosen former campaign 2016 rival Ben Carson to become secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Trump said in his statement that he was “thrilled to nominate Carson,” adding that he “has a brilliant mind and is passionate about strengthening communities and families within those communities.”
Carson had recently downplayed having any role in the Trump administration, saying that he didn’t know where he would fit. But in a statement on Monday, the retired pediatric neurosurgeon said he felt he could “make a significant contribution particularly by strengthening communities that are most in need.”
This position comes as a surprise to many, but the idea has been foreshadowed.
Carson, who had previously been rumored to be a contender for a job heading Veteran’s Affairs, Education or Health and Human Services, could appear at first glance as an odd choice for HUD. However, Carson wrote and spoke about the department and issues affected by its actions numerous times during his time as a primary candidate, and he also addressed some of what may soon face him in a Facebook post last month that hinted at a HUD job offer from Trump.
What do you think? Did Trump make a good choice with Carson as the head of HUD? Let us know in the comments below.
