This year, lots of Americans must feel like they’re living through a series of earthquakes, but not the geological kind.
The rise of Donald Trump has created divisions within the Republican Party, with many famous conservative pundits and even entire publications either joining the #NeverTrump camp or leaving it.
Liberals and progressives have been split too, over Hillary vs. Bernie. One leading voice on the left just took one of its key talking points to a whole new level, though. He’s tired of liberal denial and wants his fans to start facing reality.
Bill Maher’s old TV show wasn’t called “Politically Incorrect” for nothing. An outspoken, even crude man of the left, he nevertheless had this to say about the progressive reaction to the Orlando terror attack:
“I hear a lot of talk today about xenophobia. Is it really phobia if you have something to be afraid of? Fifty-two percent of British Muslims think being gay should be illegal.
“There certainly is a hard right wing in this country. But they have no power. It’s a lot different. Do you really think if America had radicalized ghettos of Muslims like London and Brussels and Paris where a woman who would walk down the street in a short skirt would be hassled because it was anti-Islamic? What would Americans do if that happened in this country?
“Can we all agree on this because even the people who fight me on this issue usually agree that Islam needs a reformation. Do we all agree on that?”
Political correctness has been getting innocent people killed since the morning of September 11, 2001, when airport staff kept concerns about some of the hijackers to themselves. Fear of being called “Islamophobic,” and being sued or fired, prevented them, and other concerned citizens ever since, from alerting authorities to potential terrorists.
Maybe those on the left will finally get the message now that one of their own has spoken.
