It’s safe to say that U.S-Russian relations aren’t the best. Ever since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia has struggled with its identity. Even though we have been an ally in helping rebuild their society, there has always been lingering tensions between the two world powers.
There are still many Russians—including those in power—who remember the Cold War. The deep-seeded animosity between America and Russia has never fully gone away.
Just look at the frequent cyber attacks on our national computer systems. Since the early 2000’s, we’ve heard about infiltrations in our networks, from major newspapers to the Pentagon.
Usually after this happens, speculation abounds that is was either Russian or Chinese hackers, despite real evidence. This hasn’t helped our relations with the country, whose current leader seems all too eager to wage war on someone.
The most recent rhetoric coming out of Moscow, however, makes matters worse.
From Metro UK:
Zvezda, a nationwide TV service run by the country’s Ministry of Defence, said last week, ‘Schizophrenics from America are sharpening nuclear weapons for Moscow.’
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday proposed a law suspending a Moscow-Washington agreement to dispose of weapons-grade plutonium.
Officials said on Friday that underground shelters had been built which could house 12 milion people – enough for the entire population of Moscow.
This comes after recent examples of aggression from Russia. Recently they’ve expressed outrage over a U.S.-backed missile defense system in Eastern Europe. Then there was the recent bombings by Russian forces against Syrian civilians. Russia seems just itching for a fight, wherever they can get it.
Perhaps Putin just wants to show off his military might. Perhaps he misses the days when footage of Soviet missile launchers was on every channel. Or perhaps he has a larger plan of acquiring new territory for his nation.
Either way, Moscow is sending some troubling messages. We must stay on alert.
