Donald Trump, like a gentleman, invited his vanquished opponent Ted Cruz to come and speak before the Republican National Convention. He had hoped to make peace and give Cruz the opportunity to share his support and encourage unity among the party.
Trump made a big gamble inviting a former enemy into the house, especially with all the bad blood between them after a contentious primary cycle. He risked egg on his face if his effort to unify the party in this way didn’t succeed.
It turns out Ted Cruz is the one with egg on his face. ABC News reports the turning point in Cruz’s speech:
“To those listening, please, don’t stay home in November. If you love our country, and love your children as much as I know you do, stand, and speak, and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution,” Cruz said.
When it became clear Cruz would not only not explicitly endorse Trump, but also not even support him against Hillary Clinton in the lead up to November, the tenor of the room turned on a dime.
As he continued speaking, and the crowd began to realize that an endorsement seemed less likely, the cheers that marked the early part of the speech became boos.
Cruz had to leave the building as quickly as possible. It looks like Donald Trump will have to unify the party without the support of some key players in the party. And unify the party he will, just as he has secured the nomination.
