Exactly one year after the tragic airport bombing in Brussels, terror has once again rocked Europe. This time, the target was Parliament in London.
A deranged man drove a gray 4×4 across Westminster Bridge, striking up to a dozen innocent civilians on his way to the gates of Parliament. One woman has been reported dead.
After crashing his car into the gates, he stepped out while wielding an eight-inch knife. A police officer was injured before the assailant was shot to death.
Although Parliament was in session at the time, no members were injured, with Prime Minister Teresa May being quickly escorted to safety by armed guards.
From The Sun:
Commons Leader David Lidington told MPs: “What I am able to say to the House is there has been a serious incident within the estate.
“It seems that a police officer has been stabbed, that the alleged assailant was shot by armed police.
“An air ambulance is currently attending the scene to remove the casualties.
“There are also reports of further violent incidents in the vicinity of the Palace of Westminster but I hope colleagues on all sides will appreciate that it’d be wrong of me to go into further details until we have confirmation from the police and from the House security authorities about what is going on.”
While it is too early to give specifics on the attacker’s motives and identity, it seems highly likely that this is another case of radical Islamic terrorism.
The attacker’s method of car ramming and knife wielding matches that of so many other terrorist attacks that have occurred across Europe, as well as Israel. Germany and France in particular faced eerily similar attacks just last year.
It appears Europe’s open border policy is continually coming back to bite them.
The UK Parliament is on lockdown and the police are treating this as a terrorist incident.
