Despite Donald Trump’s clear victory during the Republican primaries and the high stakes this coming November, there are still Republicans foolishly opposing Trump. Though their numbers are small, they still feel the need to say and do things that are contrary to the candidate, even going as far as standing against him.
It’s clear that these people—mostly Washington insiders from Congress—are just doing this to protect their own careers. They are up for reelection, if not this November then soon, and they think that aligning with Trump will hurt their chances. Because, you know, backing your party’s candidate for president will help you lose votes as a Republican.
A few Republicans have even started throwing their support towards Hillary to hurt Donald. The Bush family has expressed its unhappiness by withholding two former presidents from the convention and clearly signaling their disapproval in any way they could. So when this news broke, both sides of the aisle were surprised.
From The Political Insider:
Addressing state GOP activists Saturday, [George P.] Bush said it was time to put aside any lingering animosity from the primaries — where Trump defeated Bush’s dad, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, among others — and get behind Trump.
“From Team Bush, it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but you know what? You get back up and you help the man that won, and you make sure that we stop Hillary Clinton,” Bush said, according to video of the remarks provided by an audience member.
That’s right. The son of Trump’s former rival Jeb Bush has come out to support the candidate for president. At least he, unlike the rest of his family, understands the need to back the Republican Party. He seems to understand that the top priority is to stop Hillary Clinton, whose time in the White House will prove more disastrous than Obama’s.
Bush was speaking in his capacity as the Texas GOP’s victory chairman, who is responsible for overseeing the party’s statewide campaign in November. Bush had been criticized for taking the role without backing the party’s presidential nominee.
We can speculate why the change of heart. Perhaps this Bush sees potential in aligning with Trump. It can open doors should the man be elected president. I truly believe George P. Bush understands the need to back his party. We cannot allow Hillary Clinton to become president. It would take America down the path from which it would never recover.
Le that be a lesson to the rest of the Trump holdouts. If the son of Jeb Bush can get on board, surely all conservatives can do the same.
