Donald Trump ran on a platform of cracking down on illegal immigration. One of his campaign promises was to cut off federal funding for these cities, which are in clear violation of the laws of the land.
Both Trump’s loyal base of supporters and liberal opponents are waiting to see if his campaign promises will actually carry weight in a Trump administration—but Americans don’t need to wait to find out.
One lawmaker has come up with a concrete plan to turn Trump’s promise into a reality:
According to Breitbart, Rep. John Culberson, a Texas Republican and chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science, has already put in place a legal apparatus to defund sanctuary cities if they do not come into compliance with federal law.
“Using existing law and the power of the purse, I have seen to it that the top 10 sanctuary cities in America have already been certified as violating existing federal law,” Culberson said in an interview. “Everything is pre-positioned for these 10 cities, including Chicago, New York, the entire state of California.”
“They will lose all their federal law enforcement money if President Trump chooses to,” he added. “The president can cut off their money on Jan. 20 if they do not hand over criminal illegal aliens in their custody.”
Immigration was arguably the issue that took Donald Trump from a “joke” candidate to the White House. He tapped into a vein of justifiable anger and concern about the issue that the elites had long dismissed as “racist.”
Now he has to keep that promise, and Culberson’s plan offers one powerfully effective pathway to getting that done.
