There are some actions so despicable, even the feckless Republicans and Democrats are willing to risk infuriating our outgoing lame-duck President.
Congress has had a pretty pitiful track record of late, approving blowout budgets and letting Obama run roughshod over them. But with Donald Trump about to assume the mantle of the Presidency, clearly the stakes have changed. And not just for the Republicans.
So when Obama took action against America’s closest ally, effectively shaming America, the people’s representatives had to speak out. And speak out they did. From The Hill:
The House passed a resolution on Thursday denouncing the Obama administration’s abstention from a critical United Nations Security Council vote condemning Israeli settlements.
Lawmakers of both parties supported the measure in a 342-80 vote, with four Democrats voting “present.” A majority of Democrats, 109, voted for the resolution; 76 Democrats opposed it. All but four Republicans voted for the resolution.
“This government, our government, abandoned our ally Israel when she needed us the most,” Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said in an animated House floor speech. “These types of one-sided efforts are designed to isolate and delegitimize Israel. They do not advance peace. They make it more elusive.”
This situation will not stand in the coming days. Trump, who nearly blocked Obama’s shameful action, is wholly committed to a strong relationship with its closest ally. He has even gone as far as inviting Prime Minister Netanyahu to his Inauguration.
The real news here is that Congress, who has seemed wrapped around Obama’s pinky finger, are already taking new direction from an assertive President-Elect who will use America’s deepest held principles to guide him in making decision for our country. Welcome to a whole new world.
