It’s the year 2016, but each day it feels more like 1984, with Big Brother tracking your every movement. Every discussion. Every thought.
Now your favorite social network is doing far more than connect people connect socially. They’re tracking your political preferences and targeting you based on its findings.
Facebook goes far beyond tracking whether you “like” or follow a politician’s page. As you will see below, they are looking to label everyone, no matter how much you try to hide your political preferences and use Facebook as it was meant to be—a social network.
And now users can find out exactly what Facebook thinks of them when it comes to politics. The New York Times reports:
You may think you are discreet about your political views. But Facebook, the world’s largest social media network, has come up with its own determination of your political leanings, based on your activity on the site.
And now, it is easy to find out how Facebook has categorized you — as very liberal or very conservative, or somewhere in between.
Even if you do not like any candidates’ pages, if most of the people who like the same pages that you do — such as Ben and Jerry’s ice cream — identify as liberal, then Facebook might classify you as one, too.
So your ice cream preferences may lead Facebook to label you as a liberal. They must have this down to a science, but for once the average user is able to see what Facebook has determined. Look up your political views according to Facebook (follow the directions below) and comment whether they got it right—and whether they should be doing this at all.
Try this (it works best on your desktop computer):
Go to facebook.com/ads/preferences on your browser. (You may have to log in to Facebook first.)
That will bring you to a page with your ad preferences. Under the “Interests” header, click the “Lifestyle and Culture” tab.
Then look for a box titled “US Politics.” In parentheses, it will describe how Facebook has categorized you, such as liberal, moderate or conservative.
(If the “US Politics” box does not show up, click the “See more” button under the grid of boxes.)
I don’t know about you, but this seems awfully intrusive and prying to us. Facebook has already been outed as leaning towards Hillary and her Democrat horde, hiding more conservative news posts. Mark, we suggest you find better things for your company to do, like create a better user experience for your billion plus users—instead of analyze them to death.
