We’ve seen all kinds of unhinged meltdowns from the left in the Trump era. Some can easily be brushed off as incessant whining akin to children that haven’t gotten their way, while others cross the line into the territory of alarming.
Our latest entry into the latter category comes courtesy of State Rep. Scott Hamann, a Democrat from Maine that unleashed a repugnant rant on Facebook.
As the Bangor Daily News shares, he decided to show just how much angst the fact that Trump is president is causing him.
“Trump is a half term president, at most, especially if I ever get within 10 feet of that p***y,” Hamann wrote in a lengthy Facebook post.
While it might be easy to dismiss Hamann’s post as a sign that he needs a hug, a warm beverage and some quiet time, it’s not so easy to do that in the current political climate.
We’re only about a month removed from the frightening shooting at a GOP baseball practice in Virginia, and cavalier references to harming an elected official need to be investigated.
Threatening the president is a crime. The U.S. Secret Service is aware of Hamann’s statement and tracking the incident but has not opened an investigation, David Watson, resident agent in charge of the service’s Maine field office, said Wednesday afternoon.
In the Facebook post Hamann also draws a negative comparison between Trump and President Barack Obama — including a reference to the “Trump crime family” — blames Republicans for stymying the former president and taunts supporters of the current one.
“You’re a f—cking pussy. And you people are destroying America,” Hamann wrote. “100% of intelligent Americans agree that Trump is a complete loser.”
Hamann has been roundly blasted for his outrageous comments. He has denied requests for interviews to this point, but he has released a statement on the matter.
“This is not language I typically use, it does not reflect my personal values and, while misguided, it was intended to make a visceral point about the devolving political discourse in America,” Hamann said.
Really? Your argument is that the political discourse in the nation has devolved, yet you cause it to devolve even further with an unhinged rant?
There’s absolutely nothing edgy, pointed or brave about posing such incendiary remarks.
Suggesting violence against another is never okay, regardless of what ‘visceral point’ you’re attempting to make.
We can only hope that the Secret Service and the powers that be in Maine look into Hamann ASAP. An elected official that engages in such unhinged rants has no business being in sniffing distance of a position of power and influence. Period.
