Fireworks are very popular in Mexico, especially around holidays.
Unfortunately, what appears to be a tragic accident has marred Christmas in San Pablito.
The Associated Press reports:
An explosion ripped through Mexico’s best-known fireworks market on the northern outskirts of the capital Tuesday, injuring scores of people and sending a huge plume of charcoal-gray smoke billowing into the sky.
National Civil Protection Coordinator Luis Felipe Puente told Milenio TV that 60 people were hurt but he had no immediate report of any fatalities at the open-air San Pablito Market in Tultepec, in the State of Mexico.

This tragedy is similar to one that occurred in 2005 on Mexican Independence Day.
Since the initial AP report was filed, the death toll has risen to 29. When watching the videos of the tragedy, it’s almost a miracle that even more people weren’t killed.
