The nation’s elites don’t even pretend to care anymore. Why should they? On both sides of the political aisle, the Beltway establishment is convinced they have a perpetual lock on power.
Case in point: Every summer, Congress takes an extended break, on your dime. Now, Washington D.C. was built on a swamp (by a Frenchman) which explains a lot, including why living (let alone working) there is unpleasant during the summer.
However, the invention of air conditioning a few generations ago should have put an end to this “traditional” break. Fox News host Greta Van Susteren certainly thinks so:
“They call it a ‘recess.’ I’m not that stupid and neither are you. It’s a vacation, seven weeks, paid for by you.
“Adding to this, the media excuses this seven-week paid vacation with the pathetic ‘that’s how it is always done. Really? That makes it OK?
“You should take a vacation only when you have earned it, not when you’re trying to pull a fast one on the American people.”
On the other hand, some would argue that the less time politicians can spend “working” in Washington, cooking up new ways to steal our money and regulate our lives, the better!
