The highly-anticipated season finale of HBO’s hit series ‘Game of Thrones’ left fans with plenty to talk about until the next season rolls around.
We can add another talking point to the mix. According to one of the show’s stars, Liam Cunningham, there was a nugget buried in one of the finales pivotal scenes.
So what was it? A clue about an upcoming plotline? Something that ties together an ongoing question about the series?
Absolutely not. Instead it dove into politics and left viewers with a lot to process.
The Daily Wire reports:
But it turns out that those drawn out speeches, especially the ones delivered by King in the North, Jon Snow, were no coincidence, and certainly weren’t born out of desperation for material, though the writers haven’t had much to work with since author George R.R. Martin has stubbornly refused to finish the final books in the Game of Thrones series.
It turns out, the writers and actors appear to have intended Jon Snow’s finale speech to be a lesson to the show’s fans about voting in a politician like Donald Trump.
Really? Here’s another question: Why?
Did it ever occur to the writers that fans of the show view it as an escape in which they can put their worries to the side for a little while?
How about the fact that there are hundreds of options for people out there to get their political insights from?
What about the fact that there just may be some Trump supporters in the viewing audience?
We could keep going with the questions, but it’s quite clear that the shows braintrust could care less about the obvious answers to them.
Liam Cunningham, who plays pirate-turned-King’s hand Davos Seaworth in the show, revealed to Variety magazine how “meaningful” Snow’s speech about honest leaders was supposed to resonate with a nation in chaos.
“That speech that Jon Snow gave about the nature of lies and what’s been said, and what happens if we don’t stick to our word — we filmed that on exactly the day that a certain POTUS was elected and it had incredible resonance while we were filming it,” Cunningham told Variety.
While we’re super happy that the scene had such ‘resonance’ for Cunningham and company, the fact remains that this is yet another off putting decision from the entertainment community.
Is it possible to watch anything that’s supposed to be entertaining without having it turn into a soliloquy on the liberal narrative?
It’s getting to the point that you seriously have to question the motivations of those behind the scenes before making your viewing choices.
Who in their right mind thinks that it’s a good idea to potentially alienate roughly half of the potential viewing audience?
It’s mind-blowing, and the list of programming choices to avoid grows longer by the day.
