The Washington Post just broke a story about a group of GOP insiders who are plotting a secret third-party run against Trump.
The extent to which the party is willing to undermine its own candidate is unprecedented in recent political history.
Here’s what the Post had to say:
These GOP figures are commissioning private polling, lining up major funding sources and courting potential contenders, according to interviews with more than a dozen Republicans involved in the discussions. The effort has been sporadic all spring but has intensified significantly in the 10 days since Trump effectively locked up the Republican nomination.
And it’s not just a few people. The secret meetings have included “2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney, a handful of veteran consultants and members of the conservative intelligentsia.”
This isn’t even the first plot against Trump’s candidacy either. Several others have tried. This is perhaps the biggest effort though.
The potential recruits have included:
- Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse
- Former Governor and candidate John Kasich
- Former Senator Tom Coburn
- Former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice
- Retired Marine Corps Gen. James N. Mattis
- Retired Army Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal
- Billionaire businessman Mark Cuban
So far no one has agreed to run against Trump, however. They think that it is not doable.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS EFFORT? Do you support Trump or do you think that these GOP politicos are correct?
