Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton has some bad news for America regarding a cherished freedom – and everybody from business owners to First Amendment activists need to take note.
During a recent Breitbart News Daily show on SiriusXM, Bolton warned: The fate of the Internet is at stake.
And, he warned, in a decade, the concept of a free exchange of thoughts in an online world could be a thing of the past.
His comments come as America is due to transfer oversight of the Internet to an international body.
Bolton said he was “very concerned” about the transfer of oversight, Breitbart reported.
“What we’ve gotten out of the Internet, under the shelter of a private American organization that contracts with the Commerce Department, [is] one of the few cases that I can think of in our history where we’ve had that kind of government involvement without regulation and interference,” Bolton said, Breitbart reported.
But the handover will change that.
“I will predict right here,” Bolton said, Breitbart reported, “within 10 years it will come under the control of the United Nations and the Internet as we know it will end because there are governments around the world that are already doing everything they can to prevent a free and open Internet in their countries, and it will extend to ours in due course.”
He also said the turn-over over Internet control to a foreign entity will go down in history as one of the world’s biggest mistakes.
“[It’s] a mistake of such colossal proposrtions,” he said, the news outlet reported, “that you would have thought we’d have a huge debate about it in this country.”
