Another day, another issue distorted by the media. Recently Donald Trump called into question the view of Judge Curiel over a court case, claiming that his Hispanic heritage might influence his bias.
Those comments sent the media into a tizzy, as Democrats and Republicans called Trump a racist. How quick the established conservatives turn on Trump. While the GOP nominee simply stated a potential fact, those against Trump used it as another attempt at attacking his character. Since when does wanting a fair court case in America paint a man as racist?
The fact that conservatives like Newt Gingrich and Paul Ryan criticized Trump over it shows their weak will and cowardice. They are so quick to abandon the man because of what the media says. But you’ll never guess who agrees with Trump’s statement: Obama-appointed judge Sonia Sotomayor.
From Allen B West:
As the New York Times reported in 2009, In 2001, Sonia Sotomayor, an appeals court judge, gave a speech declaring that the ethnicity and sex of a judge “may and will make a difference in our judging.”
In her speech, Judge Sotomayor questioned the famous notion — often invoked by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her retired Supreme Court colleague, Sandra Day O’Connor — that a wise old man and a wise old woman would reach the same conclusion when deciding cases.
“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,” said Judge Sotomayor, before she was confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice.
Ignoring her derisive comments about white men, Sotomayor makes a good point. Of course a Latina woman, with her “richness of experiences” would have a different view of a case than someone with different life experiences. Perhaps a Latin judge would look too favorably on a case involving Latinos, and thus make him unfit to preside over it.
It’s shocking to think that Sotomayor’s words confirm Trump’s comments. While conservatives are attacking their own man, a liberal Supreme Court Judge agrees.
Let’s watch and see, however, if Sotomayor comes out with a different opinion. Perhaps her “rich” experiences will make her abandon her previous statements.
