For too long, Republicans have let their critics go too far, under the guise of “taking the high road.”
Remember the vicious and sometime even treasonous comments liberals made about George W. Bush, to cite just one example? They illustrated the double standard in American politics: that the Left can say whatever it wants, and the Right is supposed to “stay classy” and ignore the smears.
A new era has dawned and one signal of that is Donald Trump’s willingness to go toe to toe with his opponents, online and off. He and his family have been the targets of unprecedented verbal abuse, but unlike so many other Republican public figures, they’ve let it be known that they will not be bullied.
First Lady Melania Trump has been subjected to sick and literally slanderous accusations and she is fighting back. Not only that, she’s winning.
From the Independent Journal Review, the judge just handed down a scathing rebuke to her slanderer:
“The court believes most people, when they hear the words ‘high-end escort’ that describes a prostitute. There could be no more defamatory statement than to call a woman a prostitute.”
The first lady declared victory and settled her lawsuit against the Maryland blogger.
The court found for Mrs. Trump and the blogger “agreed to pay a ‘substantial sum,’ issue a retraction, and apologize to Mrs. Trump.”
Here’s his official apology:
“I posted an article on August 2, 2016 about Melania Trump that was replete with false and defamatory statements about her. I had no legitimate factual basis to make these false statements and I fully retract them. I acknowledge that these false statements were very harmful and hurtful to Mrs. Trump and her family, and therefore I sincerely apologize to Mrs. Trump, her son, her husband and her parents for making these false statements.”
Later this week, Mrs. Trump’s lawyers refiled their suit against a much more imposing defendant, the UK’s Daily Mail. The paper has already issued a retraction after printing the same rumor, but the Trump’s new suit “claimed significant emotional and economic damage and seeks financial compensation of at least $150 million.”
In addition, the Trump legal team also forced a YouTube video creator to remove a video claiming that Trump’s son Barron is autistic.
The Trump family is sending an important message to the media:
It is no longer “open season” on conservatives. Unfounded allegations will be dealt with in the courts and other legal means.
In turn, these victories let Trump supporters know that he isn’t about to lie down and take unwarranted comments when they are directed as his family. It sets a good example for everyone, about standing up for yourself and refusing to be villainized by smear merchants.
