The #NeverTrump crowd just got crazier, if such a thing is possible.
The lead by the Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol — a long time conservative Establishment figurehead whose spectacularly inaccurate predictions are the stuff of legend — they’re floating yet another possible candidate to steal the nomination from The Donald.
Undaunted by his previous embarrassment (when the fellow he loudly touted, David French, turned him down), Kristol has a new, far more familiar name in mind to lead his fantasy coup.
As Brietbart reports…
#NeverTrump leader Bill Kristol is floating a new name in his search for an establishment presidential candidate to mount an independent run to undermine presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump: John McCain.
Kristol tweets that McCain was in DC raising money for his Senate reelection bid against his conservative primary challenger, Dr. Kelli Ward.
In his tweet, Kristol mused, “Why not an indie run for President?” At that, Dr. Ward hit back in a pointed statement to Breitbart:
Hillary Clinton supporter Bill Kristol is the worst sort of establishment hack. It’s really no surprise that he’s helping John McCain raise big bucks from the big government crowd in DC. (…)
Both have worked hand in hand with Hillary and Obama to send weapons to jihadists and ISIS. Now both are working to divide the Republican party by undermining our nominee. That’s why John McCain is losing the general election in a reliably red state to a rubber stamp Obama Democrat.
John McCain has always had one foot across the aisle, but now the other is in the political grave. The very fact that he is thinking about running as an independent shows how endangered he is in the primary now that he is facing a conservative champion who will finally mix the mortar to fix the border.
Wow! Ward’s words will likely inspire comparisons to Sarah Palin — ironically, McCain’s former Vice Presidential pick and, arguably, one of the best things about his doomed campaign for the White House.
Also ironically, it was Bill Kristol himself who, in a rare instance of sound judgement, had helped raise the then-Alaskan governor’s profile to the point where she became McCain’s running mate, and then a political superstar in her own right.
It would be hilarious if, by accidentally drawing attention to Dr. Ward, Kristol “helps” make her another inspiring Republican woman to watch.
