Tensions between North Korea and the United States are currently higher than they have been over the past several years.
It seems as though every week the North Korean government threatens to test a new weapon or start a nuclear war. In fact, the North Korean military has launched several test missiles, with mixed results.
Recently, the tensions took a much more personal turn.
After intense negotiations, an American college student named Otto Warmbier was released from prison in North Korea.
Warmbier was sentenced to hard labor after the North Korean regime accused him of “hostile acts” when he was traveling through the country on a trip.
When Warmbier arrived home, it was revealed that he was not alive and well, but rather in a coma. The regime stated that he contracted botulism in prison, but doctors soon concluded that his condition resulted from torture.
Sadly, Warmbier died from his injuries soon after returning home.
North Korea refuses to take responsibility for the 22-year-old’s death. Interestingly, Warmbier’s father blames someone else as well.
From The Blaze:
Fred Warmbier said President Barack Obama’s administration urged his family to stay quiet after Otto’s arrest became known to the public. “Do I think the former administration could have done more? I think the results speak for themselves,” Fred Warmbier said during a news conference Wednesday. As of this time, former President Obama has not yet commented on this allegation.
At the same time, Fred Warmbier praised President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for their role in bringing home his son. “Last evening, we received a very nice phone call from President Trump, who told us that Secretary of State Tillerson worked hard to bring Otto home. We are extremely grateful for their efforts and concern,” Warmbier said.
Fred Warmbier is angrier than ever at the Obama administration for delaying the return of his son.
There is no excuse for an administration ignoring the fact that an American student is held captive by a rogue government. Warmbier was arrested at the end of 2015, which means that Obama and his colleagues neglected him for over two whole years.
Similar to Fred Warmbier, American were sick of Obama’s ignorance. Unfortunately, Warmbier had a much more devastating reason to feel that way.
Thankfully, Otto came home before he passed away. At least his family could see him in person one last time, and hold a funeral here in the United States.
One can only imagine the horrors that Otto must have experienced. Hopefully no other American will ever have to face what he faced.
Americans need to appreciate the fact that our current administration is strong enough to negotiate on the behalf of American citizens. Though it was the least they could do for Otto, at least they did something.
Our hearts go out to the Warmbier family. We pray that Otto rests in peace, and may his memory always serve as an inspiration for the American people.
