While conservatives on Capitol Hill are celebrating the passing of the budget, other problems are looming on the horizon. And much of it is coming from established republicans.
President Trump is continuing to fulfill his promises to the American people. That includes cutting taxes and ending illegal immigration. But not every conservative in Washington is on board with his plans. There are a few holdovers from the Obama-era. Established republicans who would rather play ball with liberals, than back the President.
Perhaps the worst of them (besides John McCain) is Speaker Paul Ryan, who is trying to slip this into Trump’s plans. Millions of Americans, needless to say, are outraged.
Ryan, during a talk before the Republican Study Committee (RSC), reportedly said an amnesty for illegal aliens shielded from deportation by the Obama-created Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) would be included in an end-of-the-year spending deal.
“He did talk about the fact that that would be good if we could get ahead of that as opposed to being reactionary,” RSC Chairman Mark Walker (R-NC) told the Huffington Post following the meeting with Ryan.
Another two House Republicans confirmed to the Huffington Post that Ryan mentioned slipping DACA amnesty into the spending deal at the gathering.
While Walker said Ryan “did talk about border security,” it was not in the context of making sure a border wall — which President Trump has promised to construct along the U.S.-Mexico border — would be part of any spending bill.
“I don’t think that anybody has said definitively that the wall has to be part of that,” Walker said.
Immediately, Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) and Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID) slammed Ryan’s alleged comments to the Huffington Post about giving DACA illegal aliens amnesty in the spending bill.
Sorry, Ryan, DACA’s not on the table. We are trying to end the terrible Obama-era practice of rewarding and attracting illegal aliens. We want to close that loophole, so immigrants who want to come here can do so safely and legally. DACA is just another magnet for people who want to sneak across the border, jeopardizing our economy and national security.
Liberals know this, and that’s why they’re fighting to keep it. Ryan seems to be playing into their hand. He appears more concerned with protecting terrible, Obama-era policy, than appealing to conservatives.
Just look at his attitude about the wall. He’s all but against it. That should be enough to tell you he’s not on most Americans’ side.
Perhaps it’s time for a new Speaker.
