They have some of the strictest gun control legislation in America — and one of the highest murder rates.
Second Amendment defenders point out this deadly paradox again and again, and still, the homicide numbers soar.
Now the anti-police agitation being spread by Black Lives Matters is adding yet another element to this recipe for disaster. Luckily, one plot to assassinate cops was uncovered before it was too late.
The Chicago Sun-Times has the story:
Leaders from three West Side gang factions allegedly met last week to discuss plans to shoot members of the Chicago Police Department in response to the fatal police shooting of Paul O’Neal.
In a chilling twist, the anti-police rhetoric wasn’t just coming from the usual street protesters:
Dean Angelo, president of Lodge 7 of the Fraternal Order of Police, said “rhetoric” from the attorney representing Paul O’Neal’s family and statements from Independent Police Review Authority head Sharon Fairley were both to blame for threats against police.
“We had inflammatory and false rhetoric coming from [Michael Oppenheimer] and statements that weren’t true,” Angelo said. “You also have a lead investigator in police-involved deaths talking about how shocking and disturbing this is.” (…)
“[O]ne elected official — County Commissioner Richard Boykin — called it a “police execution” and demanded the officers be fired.
How can the police be expected to do their jobs in this sort of atmosphere? We already know that many officers across the country have essentially given up trying to fight crime because they’re afraid of finding themselves in a situation like this one. Unfortunately, there seems to be no end in sight.
