In bizarro world, cities and states thumb their nose at federal law while gleefully presenting their actions as some sort of noble gesture.
Unfortunately, that’s not the crazy premise of a new show about an alternate reality, but something that’s actually going on right here at home.
So-called sanctuary cities and states continue to prioritize the protection of illegal immigrants at all costs, and that’s just nothing short of mind-blowing.
Fox News shares the details on the latest unfathomable reach made by an elected official.
Illinois Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation on Monday that would limit cooperation with federal immigration officials, angering members of his own party who say the law creates a “sanctuary state.”
The Illinois TRUST Act — a bill that was passed by the state’s General Assembly in May — bans local law enforcement from stopping, arresting, searching or detaining anyone based solely on immigration status. More controversially, it bars local officials from detaining anyone solely on the basis of a federal immigration detainer, unless federal officials have a criminal warrant.
It’s fantastic to see that Rauner has his priorities in order.
Earlier this year, there were serious concerns that the state he is tasked with running would have no choice but to file bankruptcy.
The largest city in his state is completely riddled with violence, and there have been a stunning number of deaths as a result.
No word on how being uncooperative with federal immigration officials may help solve either one of those glaring problems.
“Illinois has been welcoming of immigrants for a long time, and this bill will continue that tradition,” Rauner said in a statement Monday. “It also makes clear that stopping violent crime will be law enforcement’s mission rather than working on federal prerogatives that a federal court has found illegal.”
How about a bill that indicates the state will show some semblance of fiscal responsibility? How about some actual efforts to stop the violence you speak of?
“As the Attorney General has said, when cities and states refuse to help enforce immigration laws, our nation is less safe,” DOJ spokesman Devin O’Malley told Fox News. “Failure to deport aliens who are convicted for criminal offenses puts whole communities at risk – especially immigrant communities in the very sanctuary jurisdictions that seek to protect the perpetrators.”
That’s what we call common sense, but it apparently doesn’t apply in bizarro world.
“Immigrants in our community should not have to feel unsafe when they go to work or take their children to school,” Illinois Democratic Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch, who was the primary sponsor of the bill, said in a statement.
Really? What about the residents that feel incredibly unsafe in the Windy City?
Can this really be happening? There have been no viable solutions offered up to crack down on violence in Chicago, but the needs of those that have entered our country illegally are at the top of the priority list?
It’s a tossup as to what’s more stunning: the fact that ‘sanctuary’ cities and states are even a thing, or the fact that leaders of those bastions of liberalism are so mind-numbingly oblivious.
