Barack Obama’s fans love to talk about how his presidency “made history.” Of course, the election of the first African-American president was a watershed moment in the story of the United States. Obama got a Nobel Peace Prize just for getting elected!
Unfortunately, his two terms in office didn’t do much to heal racial divisions, as his supporters had hoped and promised. And given the state of the world, it looks like that Peace Prize might have been premature.
While the scandal is still in its early stages, at least one individual in a position to know says that Obama could very well become another presidential “first,” but it won’t be anything he’ll want to brag about.
Of course, the story everyone has been talking about is President Trump’s assertion that his predicessor had ordered the wiretapping of Trump Tower during the election, and that these eavesdropping activities might have been illegal.
The Conservative Tribune reports:
If indeed it does turn out to be the case that the Obama administration illegally surveilled Trump’s team ahead of Election Day as some have speculated, the end result could be the unprecedented indictment of a former president on felony charges. (…)
Calling the alleged incident an “order of magnitude” bigger than the Watergate scandal, [former senior intelligence officer and retired Army Lt. Col. Tony] Shaffer stated that the incident would have included “using nation-state resources for purposes of political gain.” (…)
“This could be the first time a former president could be indicted for a felony,” Shaffer answered. “Because I think it is very possible that he acted outside of the scope of his duties, responsibilities and authorities to turn the resources of a nation-state on a candidate.”
“This is, as I’ve said before, soviet-dictator level wrongdoing,” he added.
In this must-hear interview, Shaffer added that we already know from WikiLeaks and other sources that Obama had ordered wiretapping of other individuals, from foreign dignitaries to journalists who had dared to write unflattering news stories about him.
Therefore, Shaffer said, it isn’t outside the realm of possibility that Obama would have done the same thing to Trump and his team.
And of course, the Democrats never expected Trump to actually win the election, so they must have assumed that none of this underhanded activity would ever come to light.
There has been a wealth of speculation about this scandal ever since President Trump tweeted about it over the weekend. However, Shaffer isn’t a Beltway pundit or troll on Twitter. His record of distinguished service to his country means that we should at least take his comments more seriously than we would those of many of the others who have weighed in so far.
