Throughout his tenure as president, Barack Obama has pushed for reforms that shaped America in his own image.
Be it gun control, transgender issues, health care, or race relations, Obama has set out to rewrite American values, only to create greater divides among Americans.
Now, with his term in office reaching its last gasps, he has seen it fit to infringe on another American right: freedom of speech.
Obama has used the influence of federally funded cemeteries to discredit American soldiers and prevent them and their families from representing their culture and history.
From Western Journalism:
The Department of Veterans Affairs – under the umbrella of the Obama administration – has moved to ban prominent displays of the Confederate flag in cemeteries funded by federal tax dollars.
“Congress had debated and rejected that change, but the Obama administration decided to move forward anyway, saying it was unilaterally imposing the restrictions,” reported the Washington Times.
The new policy was pushed most aggressively by Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., who had joined with several fellow Democrats to put pressure on the VA over the issue.
Leave it to West Coast politicians to spearhead a campaign to denigrate the South. While the Confederate flag is controversial to some, we can’t deny its historical significance.
To many, the flag is a part of their heritage and national identity, not as a symbol of hate, but as a symbol of the many young men who died in the Civil War. Confederates fought to defend their ways of life and families in the face of a terrible conflict.
Should they not be remembered for the good as well as the bad?
It’s hard for those of us who grew up in other parts of the country to understand what the “stars and bars” mean to Southerners. Yet, as a New Yorker, I have my own symbols that I cherish and associate with my upbringing. So for the federal government to come after the Confederate flag–branding it as a symbol of slavery–misses the other virtues it represents.
Make no mistake, this is another attempt by the liberal arm of our country to scrub our history and redefine our national identity. They are using the chip of federal funds to have their way—how is that American?
