For those with long memories, 2016 is starting to look like 1968 all over again.
After the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy in rapid succession, and the urban riots that followed, the insanity continued at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Left wing radicals, who considered the party insufficiently left-wing and anti-war, had descended upon the city with the express purpose of creating chaos.
The resulting so-called “police riot” outside convention headquarters was broadcast live into millions of American homes.
Anyone who presumed that the unedifying spectacle of Democratic delegates coming to blows was a thing of the past must have experienced deja vu this week.
Then again, at least one prominent party member seems to be suffering from amnesia…
According to CNN.com:
Sen. Barbara Boxer, a veteran of Democratic politics, says she never saw anything quite like this before.
Loud cursing, shouting, obscene gestures and vile insults, including crude comments about the female anatomy. It was all on display over the weekend as supporters of Bernie Sanders turned the Nevada State Democratic Convention into chaos. (…)
After Sanders supporters thought the convention was being shut down prematurely, loud shouting ensued and there were reports of chairs being hurled. The phone number and address of the chairwoman of the Nevada Democratic Party, Roberta Lange, was posted on social media — prompting a flood of more than 1,000 calls, angry voice mails, text messages and even death threats.
“This is a citizen of the United States of America and I just wanted to let you know that I think people like you should be hung in a public execution to show this world that we won’t stand for this sort of corruption,” an unidentified male caller said on the message, provided to CNN and other news outlets.
If these accounts are any indication, then the supposedly “deeply divided” Republican Party, with its allegedly “violent” Trump fans, is in fact a model of unity and decorum.
Perhaps not surprisingly, supporters of Bernie Sanders — likely fellow travelers of Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter and similarly volatile groups — are being blamed for the chaos.
All this, and the Democratic convention itself doesn’t even start until July. There’s still time to dig those bell bottoms and tie die shirts out of the back of the closet, and stock up on popcorn.
