“This is the most pathetic thing I’ve seen in my whole time in the United States Senate!”
If you had to guess which veteran lawmaker said that yesterday, you’d probably lose the bet.
If you’ve been under a rock for the past year, you may have missed that Democrats are downright manic over President Trump’s nomination and victory. Now they’re throwing their very best hissy fit up on Capitol Hill, acting like a bunch of misbehaved preschoolers—even though Trump has chosen exemplary cabinet members.
The man behind the quote is the last person anyone would expect to lose his temper in the halls of Congress. He is known by those on the left and the right as mild mannered and soft spoken.
He’s seen a lot in his time in elected office, so what happened to spark this outburst must be pretty serious, too.
Conservative Tribune has the story:
Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee and is known for being genteel and mild-mannered, has absolutely had it with the infantile behavior of his Democrat peers in Congress.
“I’m very disappointed in this kind of crap,” he said after Democrats walked out of a committee hearing Monday. “Some of this is because they just don’t like the president.”
The senator’s anger was reportedly driven by the Democrats’ insistence on boycotting the confirmation votes for Department of Health and Human Services secretary nominee Tom Price and Department of the Treasury secretary nominee Steve Mnuchin.
The Democrats have raised concerns about both nominees, both of which are related to their financial dealings in the past.
Of course, these and other concerns are all legitimate. Obviously, senators have an obligation to try to ensure that the very best possible individuals are selected to serve in a presidential cabinet.
However, instead of simply voting against these nominees, the Democrats through a temper tantrum. “Boycotts” are simply out of order in the Senate, where traditional decorum and basic maturity is supposed to be the order of the day.
It’s depressing to think that the Democrats will be pulling childish stunts like this for at least the next four years.
