In recent months the country has been rocked by sex scandals. Powerful public figures have been exposed for shocking acts of harassment, assault, and even rape.
Now a major democrat in Congress has been outed for misconduct and it looks like heads are about to roll.
Rumors have been surfacing of ongoing misconduct within D.C. Stories are leaking that Representatives have regularly harassed staffers.
On the cusp of these allegations, Al Franken has been accused of groping a woman while she was asleep. And there is a picture to prove it.
Now top lawmakers are demanding action. Even the Democratic Party cannot protect one of their own this time.
From Fox News:
Democrats lashed out at Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., Thursday after Los Angeles TV and radio host Leeann Tweeden accused him of kissing and groping her during a USO tour in 2006, with at least two female lawmakers pledging to return campaign funds raised for them by Franken’s political action committee.
Leaders of both parties in the Senate called for an ethics investigation of Franken, a request echoed by the senator himself, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
“The allegations brought forth are extremely disturbing,” Perez said in a statement. “Sexual misconduct, harassment, and assault are never acceptable, no matter one’s party or politics. The Senate should immediately begin an ethics investigation into Senator Franken’s conduct.”
Pelosi said any “credible allegation” should be subject to an ethics probe, telling Fox News “We are at a watershed moment and now is the time for Congress to overhaul how it deals with the issue of sexual harassment.”
It may sound refreshing that democrats are joining republicans in a call for an ethics investigation. Don’t be fooled. The only reason they are so open about it is because there is a photograph. They cannot dodge or deflect the allegations this time. The picture is undeniable proof that Franken was doing something very inappropriate.
The democrats have no choice but to appear appalled and morally outraged. But this is nothing new. Where was their outrage when Bill Clinton was up to his old tricks? Where was their outrage when Harvey Weinstein was assaulting women for decades (and everyone knew about it)?
There will most likely be an investigation. Will it go anywhere? Probably not. Franken made his apology. The democrats banged their pulpits virtue signaling. If they lead an investigation, it will just be for show.
No, the real justice comes when Franken is up for reelection. Are you from Minnesota and disgusted by his antics? Then you have the power. Vote him out and elect someone better. That’s the only true way to hold these men accountable.
