The time for talking is over.
China has long had opportunity to rein in North Korea, but they have not.
North Korea’s constant threats to attack the United States, South Korea and Japan are the direct result of China’s inaction.
Now the US is left with little choice but to take action ourselves.
The belligerent and unstable dictator Kim Jong Un has brought our country close to war. A nuclear exchange would be unthinkable, yet North Korea’s repeated missile tests have continually tried to provoke the free world.
But President Trump is no Obama, and his recent actions prove he means business.
All 100 senators have been asked to the White House for the briefing by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said White House spokesman Sean Spicer on Monday.
While administration officials routinely travel to Capitol Hill to address members of Congress on foreign policy matters, it is unusual for the entire Senate to go to the White House, and for all four of those officials to be involved.
This meeting is proof that Trump is willing to make the hard decisions that both Obama and China have failed to make.
But China is now working with the US to solve the North Korea problem. Once North Korea is solved, trade deals can be negotiated and currency manipulation can be handled. It’s the Art of the Deal in action.
It’s unclear what Trump’s specific plans for North Korea are, but the president has moved a very powerful military force into the area.
One carrier group alone would not generally be sufficient for offensive operations, but Air Force bases in Japan are close by and available.
Should Trump order a missile strike, the US must be prepared to defend South Korea, as well as face down China and Russia, both of which have moved forces into the area. This is why another carrier group likely will be sent to Japan in the coming days.
Things could potentially escalate very quickly, but the threat North Korea poses to the stability of our world is one that can be ignored no longer.
Thanks to the assertiveness of President Trump, we are living in history-making times.
