It was arguably Hillary Clinton’s biggest blunder of the night. When presented with some damning statements she’d made about “open borders,” statements made during a high priced speech that were never meant to be made public, Clinton decided to blame the messenger: WikiLeaks.
But then she doubled down even further, blaming these unflattering revelations on the Russians. Clinton rambled on and on, walking right into Trump’s trap and handing him a winning moment:
“That is a great pivot off the fact that she wants open borders,” Trump remarked, sparking a big reaction from the crowd. (…)
“She wants open borders, people are going to pour in from our country,” Trump said. “People are going to come in from Syria. She wants 550 percent more people than Barack Obama. … We are going to stop radical Islamic terrorism in this country. She won’t even mention the words and neither will President Obama.”
Clinton tried to explain that she’d been talking about having “open borders” to trade energy resources with other nations. The problem is, even if that’s true, it sounded like she was making excuses.
And as Trump accurately pointed out, Clinton wants to dramatically increase the number of immigrants — some of them less than desirable — into the United States. That sounds a lot like “open borders,” regardless of the details of that particular speech. (For which she was paid $225,000 by the way. At least someone is doing well under Obama’s “economic recovery”…)
