Ever the maverick, Donald Trump seems to have tossed out longstanding U.S. foreign policy on the Middle East, particularly the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
His critics are in an uproar as usual. How dare Trump throw away the long-touted “two-state solution”? Well, to quote Dr. Phil, “How’s that been working out for you?”
Every American of a certain age has watched president after president meet with Israel and Palestinian leaders, shake hands dramatically and announce a “peace deal”. And those same Americans have watch tensions continue to rise and violence break out.
Why not at least try a different approach in the face of this undeniable series of failures?
President Donald Trump said Wednesday he would be open to a Mideast peace agreement that doesn’t include separate states for Israel and the Palestinians, abandoning a U.S. position that has underpinned more than a decade of failed negotiations between the two sides.
“I like the one that both parties like,” Trump said of the path to peace during a joint news conference with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “I can live with either one. I thought for a while that two states looked like the easier of the two. If Israel and the Palestinians are happy, I like the one they like the best.”
Less important than the huffing and puffing of Beltway “experts” and lobbyists are the reactions of actual Israelis. According to Bloomberg:
Trump’s retreat from the two-state policy was celebrated by conservatives in Israel.
“A new era,” Naftali Bennett, leader of the Jewish Home Party, which supports expanded Israeli settlement of the West Bank, wrote on his Facebook page. “After 24 years the flag of Palestine was taken down from the flagpole and replaced by the flag of Israel.”
However, Trump also suggested a temporary halt to the expansion of so-called “settlements” in Israel, a move which has been praised by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Overall, however, Trump’s heart was clearly on Israel’s side. The president said truthfully that Palestinian children were brainwashed into hating Israelis, including being taught that they are subhuman.
Which would help explain, wouldn’t it, why negotiating “peace treaties” with such people has so far proven to be a waste of time…
