The midterm elections are just around the corner, and that will determine which political party will hold sway in the House and Senate moving forward.
State governors will also be looking to hold on to their positions, while challengers are rising fast. Some of the least popular governors are vulnerable, and could result in some very tight races.
Now, America’s most popular governors have been revealed — and they’re mostly dominated by one side.
Of the 50 states, 36 will be holding gubernatorial elections this year, which means we could see a significant shake-up across the country.
It’s possible that many new governors will be elected, as some states are leaning toward new candidates that represent the opposing party. Some governor seats could flip red, in fact.
As it stands now, though, the GOP dominates the list:
Of the top 10 most popular state leaders in the nation, all but one are Republicans. This is according to quarterly polling results obtained this week, and it’s more cause for concern for Democrats.

The most popular governor in the country is Republican Gov. Charlie Baker in Massachusetts, who holds an approval rating of 74 percent.
The Morning Consult poll also found that the lowest-ranked governors were Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (40% approval) and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (42% approval).
However, it’s interesting that 9 of the top 10 spots are all held by Republican leaders. Vermont Gov. Phil Scott enjoys a 73% approval rating, and Maryland’s Larry Hogan also cracked the 70% barrier.
The only Democrat in the top 10 is Kentucky’s Andy Beshear, but he’s likely to face a difficult reelection battle in 2023.
Notably, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appears somewhat vulnerable according to these results: she still leads GOP challenger Tudor Dixon, but that lead is down to about 6 points.
A few months ago, it appeared Whitmer would cruise to an easy victory but the gap has narrowed, possibly due to state residents questioning her handling of the pandemic.
Other governors often in the spotlight are Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Georgia leader Brian Kemp. Both received high ratings, with double-digit gaps between approval and disapproval.
Currently, experts and insiders are predicting a “red wave” in November, which would break up full Democrat control in Washington. The House seems poised to flip, while the Senate remains in question.
As for the governors, it’ll be interesting to see who sticks — and who’s out.
