John Boehner seems determined to destroy the GOP.
Despite a very visible and heated Presidential campaign, with two prominent candidates taking the forefront, Boehner appears blissfully unaware of what’s going on. Or he clearly is in support of the Democrats.
According to Politico, the former Speaker of the House has endorsed Rep Paul Ryan for president, suggesting that the dominant Trump and Cruz aren’t even running.
“If we don’t have a nominee who can win on the first ballot, I’m for none of the above. They all had a chance to win. None of them won. So I’m for none of the above. I’m for Paul Ryan to be our nominee.” (Politico).
What is Boehner talking about? Has he abandoned his party so much, that he is already refusing to accept fairly voted-on nominee? Donald Trump has been a contentious figure since he announced his candidacy.
It would be no surprise that the established Republicans withhold their support for him. But to back someone who hasn’t bothered to run?
Boehner’s had a crush on Ryan for years. After stepping down as Speaker of the House, the only person to fill Boehner’s shoes was Ryan. But in recent years, his actions in support of Obama’s decisions—most notably in regards to immigration and the budget—have not made him a popular figure among American conservatives.
This “Plan B” by Boehner smacks of ignorance and sour grapes. A last minute pick for Ryan would all but secure a win for the Democrats in the general election. The GOP would be fractured beyond repair, if one of the current candidates—with many supporters around the country—doesn’t get the nod.
So does Boehner really want to destroy his own party? Maybe he’s lost all common sense since stepping down as Speaker.
