Many of us spend our lives believing that our actions have consequences.
This appears to hold true for everyone, unless you’re a Democrat politician.
Rarely were people in the Obama administration held accountable for violating the law. Every government agency had some scandal associated with it, yet no one in Obama’s State Department was fired over Benghazi.
Nor was anyone in the Department of Justice admonished for Operation Fast and Furious.
Former IRS Commissioner Lois Lerner made headlines when it was discovered in 2013 that the agency had been targeting conservative groups.
Even though Lerner later resigned, no one was formally punished for this clear abuse of authority.
Now that Republicans control the House and Senate, that may change.
From The Daily Caller:
Two top tax-writing Republicans in the House are calling on the Department of Justice to reopen its investigation into whether former IRS official Lois Lerner unlawfully targeted conservative organizations applying for tax-exempt status.
Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady and Tax Policy Subcommittee Chairman Peter Roskam sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions Wednesday, noting the Obama administration refused to review the information the committee gathered in its extensive investigation into the matter.
According to the congressmen, there is clear evidence Lerner willfully partook in criminal activity during her tenure as the Exempt Organizations Division director, yet former President Barack Obama insisted there was “not a smidgen of corruption” at the agency.
Obama’s statements then were a clear attempt to protect Lerner from punishment. The disgraced IRS employee continued to maintain her innocence, yet made several eyebrow-raising mistakes in subsequent days.
During her hearing, Lerner repeatedly pled the 5th, refusing to say a word at the risk of incriminating herself.
Lerner used a right that was intended to protect citizens from the government to protect herself from the citizens.
Further demonstrating her guilt was the fact that Lerner had a crashed hard drive, deleted email archives, and had 400 electronic backup tapes destroyed.
The failure of the Obama administration to charge Lerner despite these obvious admissions of guilt was infuriating to many conservatives. It seemed that no matter how much evidence was presented, or not presented, nothing would be done.
But now, four years after the fact, justice may yet be served.
