Here’s a bit of good news for you, and it comes from the most unlikely of sources.
This has been one rough summer for law enforcement. After several highly publicized police shootings of black men, tensions sky rocketed among black activist groups like Black Lives Matter and the New Black Panthers.
These groups have protested across America. Their aggressive and often hate-filled rhetoric against cops have motivated unstable people to murder police offices around the country. This, in spite of the fact that most black deaths in America are the result of criminal activity, largely from black individuals.
This was something a young black man learned firsthand. And his experience with police officers was amazing.
From Mad World News:
A leader of the New Black Panther Party was recently robbed at gunpoint… Muhammad, formerly known as Clarence Jones… is the leader of the Tampa chapter of the NBPP. However, that didn’t stop him from being robbed by one of the black lives he says matters.
As Muhammad was walking home from working as a DJ at a club in Ybor City, he was stopped by 18-year-old Antwan Robertson. Robertson demanded Muhammad and the 2 other people he was with give up their possessions, according to Fox News.
Forced to call for help from the one group most controversial to the black community, Muhammad waited for police to get there. When local law enforcement arrived, they did exactly what most of us would expect — their job. The officers assisted the robbery victims and wasted no time in tracking down Robertson hiding in a dumpster. Robertson was arrested and charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm, and possession of drugs.
All of Muhammad’s stolen possessions were returned to him. The fact that this mugging was dealt with so quickly, within the same night, was amazing in and of itself. Often a mugger can quickly disappear without a trace, leaving the victim incapable of ever getting back their goods.
Yet the response on the part of Muhammad was the most shocking.
Not only does Muhammad have a new outlook on the police, he is shifting his focus to more critical issues affecting the black community. The NBPP leader has reiterated that he and his chapter will focus on black-on-black crime, which is statistically higher than any other brutality against blacks.
Finally a black activist is turning his attention to the real problem facing black Americans. All it took was for one of their leaders to become a victim, and to see how most police officers truly behave.
We all know there are bad cops out there, but the vast (and I mean VAST) majority of law enforcement agents are hard-working men and women, who don’t think twice about putting their lives on the line to serve their community. Even late at night they came out to help a man who in the past had criticized them.
Perhaps Muhammad’s example will motivate others within the New Black Panthers and BLM. Hopefully they can put all their energy and enthusiasm into making positive change among black Americans and our communities.
