What’s Happening:
All eyes have been on upcoming elections that will shape Congress. In Alaska, a special election was held to fill the seat of Rep. Don Young.
Former Gov. Sarah Palin faced off against a Republican opponent and a far-left Democrat.
New election rules gave the third-place winner’s votes to the second-place winner.
Meaning, the former governor is out.
From Fox News:
Democrat Mary Peltola has defeated former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in an Alaska special general election to fill the remainder of former Rep. Don Young’s term in Congress, according to ranked-choice voting results announced in the state on Wednesday.
Peltola will become the first Alaska native to serve in Congress and the first woman to hold the house seat from the state.
Former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin lost her race to fill a vacant House seat. The winner, Mary Peltola, is a Democrat and the first Alaska native to serve in Congress.
The state opted to use a “ranked-choice” voting system that gave Peltola the upper hand.
This system allows voters to rank their preferred candidates. The third-place choice’s votes went to the second-place choice.
Which meant, that because there were two Republicans on the ballot, Peltola had the upper hand. When everything was said and done, the Democrat had 51.5% of the vote to Palin’s 48.5%.
The media is celebrating Peltola’s win, focusing on her native background.
The ranked-choice system helped the candidate win, who supports climate change spending, Obamacare, abortion rights, and the leftist LGBTQ Equality Act.
As confusing as this new system is, the race for Alaska’s one congressional seat is not over yet.
Peltola will serve out the rest of the current term. But a November race will be held, with four candidates, which will determine who will serve a full two-year term.
This election should put a fire under the GOP’s feet to not take anything to chance. Even small changes to election rules can upend a “safe” race, as we’ve seen in recent years.
Are you planning to turn out for the 2022 midterms?
