I don’t know about you, but I’m getting sick of hearing about how people abuse the system.
Democrats crow on and on about how programs like Welfare or SNAP (food stamps) are being used to help people in need. Yeah, on paper, they sound great. Folks who hit hard times don’t have to worry, because the federal government will pay for their food, care of the American taxpayer.
Yet they ignore the many cases where the program is abused. Occasionally people who don’t need food stamps get them. That’s bad enough as it is. But then we hear about cases where store owners are running serious fraud, all thanks to blind, government handouts.
This time around a ring of Florida shop owners robbed you and me of $20 million dollars.
Twelve Floridians have been charged with running an alleged $20 million food stamp fraud scheme in one of the “largest” food stamp fraud crackdowns in history, according to the Justice Department.
Federal prosecutors told the Miami Herald that the 12 defendants who reportedly defrauded the federal government of $20 million were charged with food stamp fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud…
Some of the defendants owned, operated, or worked at retailers who accepted Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits as payment. Others worked at unauthorized stores, but allegedly used point-of-sale terminals of authorized retailers to carry out the fraudulent transactions.
“These retailers created an illegal benefits exchange system that defrauded the American taxpayer and denied healthy foods to needy children and their families. The store owners who allegedly orchestrated this trafficking scheme pocketed millions in ‘fees’ which they charged for converting food assistance benefits into cash,” Citizen-Wilcox said.
Oh Florida. When are you going to get your act together? (I say this as a Florida resident).
Why was this network of frauds able to get away with this for years? They basically rang up fake charges, using food stamps, to pocket the cash.
It’s easy to get away with, because the government is shockingly bad at managing money (cue your collective gasps of shock!). As a former employee within the federal government, I’ve seen firsthand how agencies blindly rack up the charges, hardly looking into where the money is going.
Considering SNAP is looking for recipients to give money to, this kind of fraud can go on for a long time before anything is done. Or even noticed.
The real injustice is that $20 mill will never be returned to the American people. Wouldn’t it be nice to get a refund check from the government? With a note that apologizes for their reckless use of your own money? Fat chance.
Even if these crooks pay back a portion of what they stole, you’ll never see it. It’ll be used for another bloated, worthless program.
