Got a great plot for a movie…
A rich and powerful American Senator from Utah is being courted by a group of gaming bigwigs who are trying to persuade the lawmaker to push legislation that will be considerate of the gambling industry. A mysterious 2 million dollar cashier’s check is drawn at St. George Bank. From there, it’s FedExed to a Los Angeles attorney who represents an Ireland-based company Full Tilt Poker.
Following me so far?
The check, made out to Mail Media LTD (a Full Tilt Poker-owned entity used to launder online gambling funds) deposits the millions at Basler-Kantonalbank in Switzerland, where Mail Media had an account!
Okay, now the hero enters the picture!
Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings (what a great hero’s name!) begins his investigation into whether the money was then transferred into a Marshall Islands account in the name of Searchlight Holding, Inc., to benefit or even bribe the rich and powerful evil American Senator!
Unfortunately our hero runs into a skirmish with the Feds! Through his efforts, he is eventually stonewalled by the powers that be in the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigations! Both of these arms of the government decide that there’s nothing to see here!
Sounds compelling and dramatic! The stuff of Hollywood, right? Except that it’s real. And the rich and powerful American Senator is outgoing Harry Reid. That’s right! The Salt Lake Tribune published the story and Breitbart has expanded on this:
Documents gathered by The Salt Lake Tribune from state and federal investigations, court filings and public records requests — including audio recordings of interviews and thousands of pages of transcripts, summaries by investigators, emails, requests for evidence and other materials — show that the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI failed to pursue a vigorous investigation of this money and any potential tie to Reid.
Bottom line: This is Chicago-style politics. Attorney Troy Rawlings, our tragic hero, apparently showed up to a gun fight with a knife. It’s no wonder that the American public has such a terribly low opinion of the government in general. When it’s transparently obvious that some people are above the law, the rest of us can only shake our heads sadly…and pull the lever for a true Washington outsider.
