In the beginning, almost a hundred years ago, the Hollywood studio heads were staunch Republicans and so were lots of movie stars, but today, the power brokers of show biz are usually Democrats. Tinsel Town has been a left-wing haven at least since the 1960s.
Now the unthinkable has happened: In an election campaign full of earth shattering surprises, here’s the latest — one big name Hollywood “progressive” has jumped ship and she isn’t going quietly. You’d think Oscar-winning actress and feminist Susan Sarandon would be enthusiastic about helping elect “the first woman president” but that isn’t the case:
“I believe in a way [Hillary Clinton] is more dangerous than Donald Trump,” she said in an interview with the liberal outlet “The Young Turks.” “They’re both talking to Henry Kissinger, apparently … She did not learn from Iraq, and she is an interventionist, and she has done horrible things — and very callously. I don’t know if she is overcompensating or what her trip is. That scares me. I think we’ll be in Iran in two seconds.
“I don’t know what his policy is. I do know what her policies are, I do know who she is taking money from. I do know that she is not transparent and I do know that nobody calls her on it,” she said.
Sarandon was a vocal supporter of Bernie Sanders and is no doubt bitter about how the nomination process worked out. That said, Sarandon didn’t confine her comments to that piece of now-ancient history. She was looking ahead to a future Hillary Clinton administration and, as a dedicated peacenik, she didn’t like what she saw.
That said, it’s a little amusing to see Sarandon admit that she doesn’t know what Trump’s policies are on matters like military intervention, since he made them very clear in the debates, and elsewhere. It’s odd that people like Sarandon, who consider themselves well informed and sophisticated (and qualified to lecture us how to live) somehow wasn’t able to glean that information anywhere.
