Over the course of the coming weeks, we will continue to learn about President-Elect Donald Trump’s transition into the White House.
We have already learned the names of many of his new appointees. In the time between now and the inauguration, Trump and his people will work tirelessly to find the right people for over 4,000 positions within our government.
It’s a huge task, but something the experienced leader is up for. One of the most crucial positions is that of secretary of state. We’ve discussed the possible candidates Trump might select.
Among them is former GOP candidate Mitt Romney. But many Trump supporters are upset over this possibility. The man was an outspoken opponent of Trump’s, criticizing him during the campaign. Many saw Romney as the face of the #NeverTrump movement.
A massive outpouring of concern has arisen online over the selection. And it might just sway the President-Elect.
Appointing Mitt Romney as secretary of state would be viewed by many supporters of President-elect Donald Trump as a major betrayal, former Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told CNN on Sunday.
“It’s just breathtaking in scope and intensity,” Conway said of the opposition to Romney among Trump supporters.
“Receiving deluge of social media & private comms re: Romney Some Trump loyalists warn against Romney as sec of state,” Conway wrote on Twitter on Thursday, linking to a POLITICO article about opposition to Romney.
“I felt compelled to come forward on behalf of the people who were weighing in,” Conway said of that tweet.
Conway echoed the concern many Americans have over Romney’s credentials. She discussed his lack of activity over the last few years, questioning if he has the experience to be America’s face around the world.
“Gov. Romney in the last four years, I mean, has he been around the globe doing something on behalf of the United States of which we’re unaware? Did he go and intervene in Syria, where they’re having a massive humanitarian crisis?” Conway asked. “Has he been helpful to Mr. Netanyahu?”
We don’t know what Trump’s decision is as of yet. Speculation of Romney’s involvement was largely a rumor started by the mainstream media, no doubt to interfere in the President-Elect’s process. The fact that his former campaign manager is making such strong statements suggests Trump has no plans for Romney.
But, as in many cases, we will have to wait and see.
