Surprise, surprise, another Obama-era program is failing.
We’ve learned time and again that government handouts are a bad idea. Not only do they waste tax payer dollars, but they enfeeble millions of American. People who should be working to support themselves are being told to rely on the government.
Worse is when we learn, as in the case of this program, that most of the beneficiaries aren’t even eligible.
A new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reveals that the infamous “Obamaphone” program, meant to provide low-income Americans phone and internet service, is riddled with waste, fraud, and abuse.
A three-year investigation into the controversial Lifeline Program, requested by Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO), says some 10.6 million Americans have an Obamaphone and more than 3.8 million or 36 percent of them may not be eligible.
GAO investigators sampled the program’s population and found that it had been paying for nearly 6,400 phones for people whom the government has listed as deceased; another 5,500 people were enrolled for two phones, and another group of people couldn’t prove they were eligible to receive their free phone.
“A complete lack of oversight is causing this program to fail the American taxpayer — everything that could go wrong is going wrong,” McCaskill said in a statement.
That’s right, thousands of dead people are using Obamaphones! I wonder who they are calling?
Question: can dead people send texts?
This is nothing new. Whenever the government dumps millions of dollars into an entitlement program, people find ways to abuse it.
But when people are required to pay for their own phones and Internet, that happens far less.
You may be wonder, “How can this happen? Shouldn’t the government be monitoring this program?” That’s cute. Government agencies that manage handout programs don’t care. They are told to give out the food stamps, checks, or phones, with hardly a mandate to hold people accountable.
So, it’s no surprise that this is happening.
The real question is: when is this stupid program going to be shut down?
