Shock waves are rippling through the race in the wake of a new announcement from one of Donald Trump’s rivals.
#NeverTrump lost its final chance to sway this election at the convention, and they were unable to make any progress. Now the dominos are falling in place and it seems like those who angrily opposed Trump now see that party unity is needed, and Hillary can never, ever be our president.
So when a man who thought about running against Trump late in the game, then again after Trump secured the nomination, and then tried to recruit a third-party candidate—when he thinks you can win and compliments his control and style in the race, that’s good news. From Radio Free GOP via BuzzFeed:
Former Republican nominee Mitt Romney said earlier this month he thought Donald Trump could win the presidency, citing Hillary Clinton’s high unfavorable numbers and the unpredictability of the race.
“You have to give Donald Trump credit, he was able to bring a rhetoric and a style that he had perfected over his career to the political sphere and connect with people and become the nominee,” Romney said. “Despite the fact that I and a lot of other people thought he would not be an ideal nominee, he is. At this stage, it’s rougher going, but I can’t predict what’s gonna happen.”
“To be honest, it’s very possible in my view that Trump wins,” continued Romney. “I wouldn’t think it’d be by a landslide, but I think he could win. I think he could lose, I think he could lose by a landslide. But, I don’t know which it’s going to be and a lot of that depends on what happens to Hillary Clinton. Is there a meltdown moment, or some implosion of some kind?”
Of course it would be more helpful to Trump if Romney came out and endorsed him, or at least said he was voting for him. But if a man who was so dead set against Donald that he was considering running and trying to find a third-party candidate to spoil Trump’s chances—if he now thinks that Trump has a good shot, a man who has had the experience of running two presidential campaigns, that is really good news for Trump.
