The tensions between the United States and North Korea seemed to be leveling off for the past couple weeks, but that changed in a big way over the weekend.
On Sunday, the rogue nation claimed that it successfully conducted a test of a hydrogen bomb. While sabre rattling and claims of might from North Korea are not a new phenomenon, this one was way more than muscle flexing.
The explosion from the test set off a massive tremor that was felt in neighboring countries. Following the test, the country claimed that that it now has the capabilities of outfitting intercontinental ballistic missiles with hydrogen bombs.
The news prompted an emergency meeting at the United Nations, and Nikki Haley, US Ambassador to the UN, outlined the situation in crystal clear fashion.
Independent Journal Review reports:
To the members of the Security Council, I must say, enough is enough. We have taken an incremental approach and despite the best of intentions, it has not worked. Members of this council will no doubt urge negotiations and a return to talks. But as I have just outlined, we have engaged in numerous, direct, and multi-lateral talks with the North Korean regime and time after time they have not worked. The time for half measures in the Security Council is over.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un seems to be taking great delight in poking the bear these days, but Haley explains that it’s much more than a show of strength on his behalf.
His abusive use of missiles and his nuclear threats show that he is begging for war.
Haley would go on to explain in no uncertain terms that the US had done all that it can, and that it’s time for the UN to kick things up a notch.
We will defend our allies and our territory. The idea that some have suggested a so called ‘freeze for freeze’ is insulting. When a rogue regime has a nuclear weapon and an ICBM pointed at you, you do not take steps to lower your guard. No one would do that. We certainly won’t.
The time has come to exhaust all diplomatic means to end this crisis and that means quickly and acting in the strongest possible measures here in the UN’s Security Council. Only the strongest sanctions will enable us to resolve this problem through diplomacy. We have kicked the can down the road long enough — there is no more road left.”
As she has often done since joining the Trump administration, Haley absolutely nailed it during her time at the microphone. She was calm and poised, and she explained the situation in a fashion that left no room for confusion.
The US is essentially running out of options here. By extension, the rest of the world is as well.
Our nation is once again being viewed as the cop that will clean things up if things get really bad, but that time may already be here. Sanctions against the rogue nation need to be ratcheted up as far as possible, and a united front from all members of the UN is imperative.
You can check out Haley’s remarks below, and we’ll keep our fingers crossed that the message has sunk in for the UN Security Council.
