“What a difference 50 years makes.”
That’s the theme of a sad, succinct meme making the rounds of social media today.
The meme places two images side by side:
On the left, it shows a black and white photo of Free Speech Movement marchers in the early 1960s, clad in suits and ties, marching through the University of California, Berkeley campus where their peaceful campaign for First Amendment rights began.
The photo on the right, meanwhile, depicts masked rioters trying to destroy the same campus, all because conservative speaker Milo Yiannopoulos was there to — you guessed it — exercise his right to free speech.
Other footage and reports from last night’s riot are far more disturbing:
Student protesters upset over a speech by writer Milo Yiannopoulos are setting fires and destroying property at Berkeley University Wednesday night.
Shouting “Shut It Down,” the protesters are removing barricades, toppling a light pole, and throwing projectiles — including fences and firebombs — at the building where the speech is being held.
Here protesters are trying to firebomb the building where the speech was scheduled to be held.
Milo Yiannopoulos just called into Fox News’s Tucker Carlson show. Here’s a clip, in which he says “the left cannot tolerate anyone … who does not subscribe to their own crazy views.”
Right on camera, seemingly oblivious to the consequences, these rioters pepper sprayed a woman wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat while she was being interviewed. Other supporters of Milo were beaten “unconsiouc with metal pipes.”
But then President Trump fired back to make his thoughts on this sickening display known to America:
If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view – NO FEDERAL FUNDS?
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 2, 2017
Many conservatives are calling what happened last night “a declaration of war” by the unhinged American Left.
Have “social justice warriors” and “progressives” finally gone too far?
It’s possible, because there are now reports that President Trump is pondering withdrawing federal funding from Berkeley in response to this melee.
He vowed to be the “law and order” president, so millions of Americans now trust that he will do something about these gross civil rights violations before they spread across the nation.
