Donald started by offering Democrats an olive branch, but they did not see his ending coming.

President Trump took the nation by surprise on Friday by setting an afternoon announcement in the White House’s Rose Garden.

After dual Senate bills failed badly, it looked like they were at an impasse, and Pelosi’s shutdown would continue indefinitely.

After Pelosi canceled Trump’s State of the Union and refused to meet with him for weeks, no one could blame Donald for holding out.

But all of a sudden he was ready to break the logjam with his own two hands.

Trump agreed to reopen the government for three weeks while negotiations continued — with no apparent wall funding concessions from Democrats.

The president also announced a bipartisan congressional committee to review border patrol requests for security and asked them to come up with a compromise deal.

But he also leveled a veiled threat to Democrats: “We all know I have a very powerful alternative.” He’s just deciding not to use it now.

Instead, he’s giving Congress one last bipartisan chance to figure out a solution. But if they don’t figure out one that makes him happy he promised to “use the powers of the Constitution to address this emergency” on his own.

So President Trump is offering a 3-week continuing resolution to open the government while negotiations continue.

Initially, this does not seem like an outcome any of Trump’s supporters expected from the dealmaker.

But Donald is already moving to turn this to his advantage. Don’t forget the cards he still holds against the Democrats.

He has threatened to announce a national emergency to use the military to build the wall, and has found up to $7B he can use to do just that.

He gets his State of the Union back at Capitol Hill in the coming days, and he’ll hammer home his case to the nation and remind Democrats he can declare an emergency under his Constitutional authority.

It’s up to them to make a good deal in the coming weeks that includes border wall funding.

If they don’t, Donald will make his move.

Unfortunately, there’s a good chance one of Obama’s liberal federal judges will halt Trump’s move to build the wall.

But in all likelihood, it will get fast-tracked to the conservative Supreme Court, who will almost definitely vote 5-4 that Trump is within his executive rights to defend the American people.
