It’s safe to say that President Trump is going to handle terrorism much differently than Obama.
For years the American people had to sit and watch as President Obama did nothing. In fact, it seemed the decisions by the former president actually aided our enemies more than suppress them.
Obama seemed sympathetic to Islamists and radical Muslims. He refused to take strong action against terrorism abroad or crack down on suspects at home. In fact, his premature withdrawal from Iraq helped create ISIS–the leader of radical Islamic terror.
When it comes to the upheaval in Syria, Obama took an even stranger course. He refused to get involved, as many civilians were heartlessly killed. He tried to help one rebel group, which eventually dissolved and joined ISIS.
He played politics as nations burned.
However, Trump is about to do the one thing that Obama was too afraid of. Is will most certainly upset a few countries, but Trump’s not scared.
From Daily Wire:
After years of pleading with U.S. diplomats for more aid and ammunition, the Syrian Kurds have finally found a sympathetic ear in President Donald Trump. This week, Trump approved a plan drafted by his military commanders to arm the Kurdish Y.P.G, or People’s Protection Units.
The Y.P.G. are perhaps the most effective military force on the ground in the fight against ISIS. But Washington has been apprehensive about overtly supporting the Kurdish militia out of concerns that it may anger NATO ally Turkey…
Turkey sees the Kurds as public enemy number one, a disloyal and treasonous people that pose a direct threat to the country’s sovereignty. While the West has directed its resources against ISIS, Erdogan has prioritized this existential battle against the Kurds both inside and outside of Turkey’s borders, dropping sorties on Y.P.G and P.K.K. targets whenever a bomb goes off in Istanbul.
The real reason Turkey’s upset? They were hoping to exploit the Syrian civil war for their own benefit. Erdogan wanted to take portions of Syria for himself, expanding his power and territory (something many nations–including Iran–are trying to do). But the Kurdish forces are his biggest rival.
They can effectively oppose ISIS and even help end the war. But Syria will be in the hands of its own people if that were to happen. Turkey will lose any chance it has at snatching up land. So of course they’re going to complain.
But why should Trump care about what Turkey thinks? Syria has been in chaos for over six years. The war is allowing ISIS to grow and thrive. It is creating a greater threat to the rest of the world. A swift and decisive victory that brings peace to Syria is needed. It seems the best chance of that happening is with the Kurdish Y.P.G.
Don’t be surprised to hear the liberal media complain about this decision too. Trump’s move is in the best interest for Syria and the United States. But our media will side with Turkey–a foreign nation–simply to oppose Trump.
That’s where their loyalties lie.
