When will liberals learn? They predict that Trump’s every move will surely be an abject failure, the end of his campaign — and almost inevitably, they are proven wrong. It happened again this week. Pundits fell over each other making jokes about Trump’s trip to Mexico, and in the end, “The Donald” ended up looking presidential (and being treated that way by his hosts.)
As conservatives never tire of reminding their liberal friends (and enemies), Mexico’s laws against illegal immigration make America’s “unfair” and “racist” racist look ridiculous. Sure enough, Mexico’s president’s diplomatic remarks about Trump’s visit echoed the GOP candidate’s policies about border integrity:
[Mexican President Enrique] Pena Nieto called for the U.S.-Mexico border to be “more efficient and more secure,” adding that his meeting with Trump was “very open and constructive.”
Trump noted during his speech that “having a secure border is a sovereign right and mutually beneficial. We recognize and respect the right of either country to build a physical barrier or wall on any of its borders to stop the illegal movement of people, drugs and weapons.”
Trump has repeatedly called for a wall between the two countries but said he “didn’t discuss” who would pay for it. He mentioned to a reporter that specific conversation will take place later.
“I was straightforward in presenting my views about the impacts of current trade and immigration policies on the United States” Trump said. “We are united by our support of Mexicans.”
In politics, appearances and optics count for so much, especially in the digital age. That’s why Hillary’s team must be panicking. Trump — who they continue to mock as a joke candidate — just got an audience with one of America’s neighbors, and was treated like the real president. She’ll be scrambling to catch up from now on.
